General X-ray and non-contrast computed tomography (CT) both use low-dose X-ray beams to create medical images. A single X-ray gives a fast two-dimensional snapshot, while CT rotates an X-ray source around you to build thin cross-sectional “slices” for a more detailed three-dimensional view—all without intravenous contrast.
How the scan works
Our radiographer positions you so the area of interest is centered in the scanner or on the detector. The scanner then captures images in seconds. Denser tissues such as bone absorb more radiation and appear bright; softer tissues appear in varying shades of grey.
Why your doctor may request an X-ray or CT
Doctors commonly use these scans to evaluate:
-
Suspected fractures or joint injuries
-
Head injuries and acute stroke symptoms
-
Kidney or ureteric stones
-
Lung conditions such as infection, nodules or emphysema
-
Bowel obstruction or severe abdominal pain
-
Foreign bodies or the placement of surgical tubes and lines
Combining X-ray and CT in one department lets us match the right test to your clinical question, balancing image detail, radiation dose and turnaround time.

General X-ray
No special prep is needed. Wear loose, comfortable clothes and remove jewellery or metal objects near the area being imaged.
Non-contrast CT
Most studies need no fasting or contrast. For abdominal or pelvic CT we may ask you to avoid food for two hours to reduce artefacts. Please wear clothing without zips or metal fasteners; a gown can be provided if required.
Arrival time
Plan to arrive 5–10 minutes before your appointment so our team can confirm your referral, complete any paperwork and answer questions. If you might be pregnant, let us know when you check in.

At Precious Health Radiology we keep every step simple, calm and efficient whether you’re booked for a general X-ray or a non-contrast CT scan.
On Arrival
-
Check in with our medical reception team. They confirm your referral and Medicare details and can answer any immediate questions.
-
Please arrive 5–10 minutes early to keep the schedule on time.
Your Scan Room
-
General X-ray rooms have adjustable chairs or standing supports, soft lighting, music and space for a support person.
-
CT rooms feature a wide, low-profile scanner bed and quiet, fast-spinning gantry. Most examinations finish in a few minutes.
During the Examination
-
Preparation: The radiographer explains the scan and asks you to remove jewellery or metal near the area being imaged. A gown and secure box for belongings are provided.
-
Positioning:
-
X-ray: You may stand or sit; wheelchair users can transfer to an X-ray chair with assistance.
-
CT: You lie on the scanner bed; cushioned supports help you stay still.
-
-
Imaging: You’ll hear a brief buzz (X-ray) or gentle whirr (CT). You might be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds to sharpen the image.
-
Review: Images are checked on the spot to ensure quality before you leave.
After the Scan
-
Collect your belongings, change back into your clothes and head home straight away—no recovery time needed.
-
A radiologist reports your study and sends the results securely to your doctor, please contact us for current report turn-around times.
