Private Dating Ultrasound Scan in Melbourne
Dating Ultrasound Scan Melbourne
What Is Dating Ultrasound Scan?
A dating ultrasound scan, often referred to as a viability scan, is typically the first prenatal ultrasound in your pregnancy journey. From around 6 weeks gestation, this scan confirms that your baby is developing normally, verifies if it is a single or multiple pregnancy and provides an accurate due date. With this information, you can better plan for future tests, appointments, and milestones.
For women who have uncertain menstrual dates, late ovulation, or irregular cycles, a dating ultrasound ensures you have a precise timeline for your pregnancy. This knowledge helps you and your healthcare provider schedule important prenatal screenings, ensuring your baby receives the best possible start.
What is the estimated time for a dating scan?
A dating ultrasound scan is typically performed between 6 to 12 weeks of pregnancy. During this critical period, the scan provides valuable insight into your baby’s early growth and helps establish a clear framework for the months ahead.
What Should You Expect Through Your Dating Ultrasound Scan?
When you arrive, you’ll fill out a brief form noting details such as your last menstrual period, if known. Our experienced sonographer will call you into the scanning room and explain the procedure, ensuring you feel fully prepared.
1. Abdomen:
In this method, you’ll lie comfortably on an examination table. A water-soluble gel is applied to your abdomen, and the sonographer will gently move the ultrasound probe over the area to capture clear images of the uterus and developing baby. A full bladder often helps achieve more detailed results, as it provides a better window for imaging.
2. Vaginal:
In some cases, especially very early in pregnancy, a transvaginal ultrasound may provide clearer images. You’ll be asked to empty your bladder and change into a gown. A sterile, covered probe is carefully inserted into the vagina. By adjusting the probe’s angle and pressure, the sonographer can obtain detailed views of the uterus, ovaries, and developing embryo. This method often yields more accurate images, ensuring you receive the most precise information about your baby’s early growth.
What Will You Learn From This Scan?
A dating ultrasound scan reveals essential information, including:
The number of gestational sacs and fetuses
The presence of a fetal heartbeat
The fetal size, which helps estimate gestational age
Any unusual uterine features, such as fibroids, that may influence your pregnancy
Understanding these factors ensures that both you and your healthcare provider can plan the next steps in your prenatal care with greater confidence.
